“When her brother moved out of the house he left Marion a book; the myth of Antigone. She had no way of knowing then, that this ancient Greek figure would become her conscience and her compass; the voice she’d return to at every uncertain turn. For the next twenty years the book would travel with her and every pocket, every backpack and every suitcase would carry the weight of those pages; the weight of a woman standing up for what she believed was right.
But Antigone is not only a story about one woman; it’s also a story about siblings. Siblings that question who they are to each other. Siblings who struggle to stand side by side. Siblings who share one certainty only: They are Adelphos! Born of the same womb!
Now at 34, the book is still on her night shelf. Along the way it has often brought comfort and it provided many an answer. Quietly, completely it shaped the woman she became. And at the same time, it has made her question her being as a sibling: Looking into her brother’s eyes now, she isn’t that sure anymore: Who am I? Who are we, to each other? And after all, Where do we stand?”
Marion Laville is a French-born performer and educator based in Amsterdam, working at the intersection of music, drama, and storytelling.
For over a decade Marion teaches music in secondary school and drama to children. Her artistic training spans drama at university, harp at the Conservatory of Chalon-sur-Saône and storytelling at Amsterdam’s Mezrab Storytelling School.
Her love for teaching and her passion for performing have shaped her focus on presence, play, and listening. Her creative practice blends storytelling, theatre and music; a combination that feeds her constant drive: using presence, imagination, true personal stories and ancient mythology to trigger, challenge and move her audience but above all to build bridges between people.
